gvSIG Desktop

gvSIG is a Geographic Information System (GIS) desktop application designed for capturing, storing, handling, analysing and deploying any kind of referenced geographic information in order to solve complex management and planning problems. gvSIG is known for its user-friendly interface and being able to access all common vector and raster formats. It features a wide range of tools for working with geographic information (query, layout creation, geoprocessing, networks, etc.), which turns gvSIG into the ideal tool for users working in the land realm.

Using gvSIG to compute light pollution from night satellite images

Situation:

The night pictures taken from the International Space Station (ISS) and other NASA missions as DMSP can be used to compute light emission from ground based locations. We need a complete GIS toolkit to study correlations among the satellite images and light sources. So we can get information about individual buildings or geographical areas.
We need also a tool which can use standard OGC services to access Geographic information and Layers from other SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure), as IDEE. The connection to spatial databases, as PostGIS, would be the last requirement.

gvSIG geoResources

Situation:

The regional government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) used gvSIG as its GIS desktop tool and their technicians used gvSIG to access dozens of geographical layers. The usual way to load layers on gvSIG had some difficulties because the sources are multiple and discovering them is not always easy.

Migrating to gvSIG in the Regional Ministry of the Environment of Andalusia

Situation:

It was necessary to go in for a versatile desktop solution for environmental technicians users over Andalucía, to reduce IT budget by reducing spending in comercial products licenses (investment in technology vs spending) and a progressive adoption of open source solutions (services, desktop and databases).
